Inspirándose en el trabajo de Max Weber, en este nuevo y provocativo estudio, el profesor Paul du Gay emprende una defensa incondicional del «ethos burocrático» y enfatiza que éste sigue siendo todavía relevante para alcanzar, en las sociedades democráticas liberales, tanto el orden social como el buen gobierno.
El autor lleva a cabo una reevaluación en profundidad de la que se conoce como ética «tradicional» de la función pública, partiendo tanto de un análisis exhaustivo de las críticas históricas y de las contemporáneas que se han realizado a la burocracia como de un cuidadoso examen de las políticas de cambio organizacional que tienen lugar actualmente en los servicios públicos. He is the author of several key studies on changing forms of identity and personhood.
